License

Licenses are the main career progression system in Derail Valley. Earning or purchasing a license unlocks new features such as new locomotives to drive, hauling more cargo of different types and more job types. There are 22 licenses in the game, three of which are earned after completing the tutorial. The other 19 are unlocked by purchasing them at a career manager while having no active fees. After unlocking most licenses, there will be an increase to your copay and a decrease in time to earn job bonuses. Licenses that are tiered require lower tiers to be purchased first. A table showing costs and benefits is below (Standard difficulty). Some jobs require more than one license simultaneously (e.g. Freight Haul + Train Length 2 + Hazmat 3). It is not necessary to carry any papers of the bought licenses in the player's inventory - they may be left anywhere and ultimately will show up in the Lost & Found. Player can check a list of bought licenses at a career manager at any time.
