A locomotive is a rail vehicle designed to move rail cars meant for the transport of freight, passengers, or other things.

There are currently seven locomotives featured in Derail Valley - the BE2, DE2, DH4, DM3, S282, S060 and DE6. They can be categorized several different ways, the most general distinction being between the old and modern locomotives. The old locomotives (DM3, S282, S060) have non-self-lapped brakes, and lack remote control compatibility and MU capability. Modern locomotives (DE2, DE6, DH4) have self-lapping brakes, are compatible with the remote control (apart from the DE6), and have MU capability. The BE2 is the first electric locomotive featured in Derail Valley. It has remote capability and self-lapping brakes.

Locomotives are named after their transmission type and number of wheels/powered axles, depending on whether they are steam or diesel-powered. For instance, the DM3 has a diesel-mechanical transmission with 3 powered axles. The S282 is a steam locomotive with 2 trailing wheels, 8 driven wheels, and 2 leading wheels.

Since Build 98, there is a Vehicle Catalog that has official load ratings for the locomotives.
